DENVER (KDVR) — Iran launched its first direct military attack against Israel on Saturday, and some Colorado officials have issued statements and commented on the matter.

According to the Associated Press, the Israeli military said Iran fired over 100 bomb-carrying drones toward Israel. Iran later announced it also launched more destructive ballistic missiles and cruise missiles.

AP reports that a U.S. defense official and two other U.S. officials spoke on the condition of anonymity and said American military forces have downed some Iran-launched attack drones that were flying toward Israel, and said the effort to intercept the attack was ongoing.

Since The White House confirmed the attack, some local officials have commented.

Sen. Michael Bennet provided FOX31 with the following statement:

Iran seeks to sow chaos in the Middle East and beyond – by attacking Israel, our allies, and U.S. troops.

We have waited for action from Speaker Johnson for months on the bipartisan national security bill. Delay emboldens our adversaries and undermines our national security.

Speaker Johnson must bring this package – which includes billions in aid for Israel and Ukraine – to the floor immediately for a vote when the House returns this week.

Congressman Jason Crow of Colorado’s 6th district issued the following statement:

I condemn Iran’s attacks and support Israel’s right to defend itself. The US should continue to defend Americans abroad, our allies, and do everything possible to prevent further escalation.

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser posted the following on X:

Praying for safety for everyone in Israel and grateful for the allied support of Israel in the face of this Iranian attack. This attack was long feared and it’s scary that it has now come to pass.

Congressman Doug Lamborn of Colorado’s 5th district posted the following on X:

I am closely monitoring the situation unfolding in the Middle East. Reports show that Iran has launched drones toward Israel. It is vital to stand by our ally. My prayers are with the people of Israel.
