Colorado National Monument Association celebrates 60th anniversary

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — The Colorado National Monument Association (CNMA) proudly embarks on its 60th year, launching a series of celebratory events. These include a concert series, special programs and a fundraising campaign with the goal of raising $60,000 in support of Colorado National Monument during this milestone year.

As the official nonprofit partner of Colorado National Monument, CNMA has played a crucial role in supporting various initiatives since 1964, when the association was started. Over the past six decades, this has included providing essential assistance for local school children on ranger-led field trips, supporting scientific research, contributing to historic preservation projects, funding trail maintenance, fostering the Junior Ranger Program and more.

CNMA is honored to enhance the outstanding work of the National Park Service, offering unique experiences to visitors worldwide and within the local Grand Valley community.

Johanna van Waveren, CNMA’s executive director, shares, “Whether you see Serpents Trail as nature’s treadmill, or your children have explored the canyons on field trips, or you enjoy the economic boost from tourism, our community is intricately connected to our treasured National Park. As we anticipate celebrating 60 years of mutual support, we really look forward to celebrating with our community.”

A highlight of CNMA’s 60th celebratory year includes a concert series and the official reopening of Saddlehorn Amphitheater, after a renovation project. Here’s a glimpse:

  • April 17: CNMA is Hot Tomato’s April nonprofit of the month, kicking off the concert series with delicious pizza and live music with the Troy Douglas Band.

  • June: Ramblebine beer release party with a special beer and member appreciation gifts.

  • Aug. 2: Saddlehorn Amphitheater and Trail Project is officially completed and celebrated with a concert in the new venue.

  • Sept. 25: CNMA’s official 60th anniversary date. Monument Vista Place (MVP) will host a large fundraising event featuring a jazz concert.

  • Throughout the year: CNMA’s ‘Then & Now’ Photo Exhibit will travel across the Grand Valley celebrating the history of protecting Colorado National Monument.

CNMA aims to raise $60,000 in 2024, its 60th year, to propel its support for Colorado National Monument into the next six decades, ensuring the continued success of preservation, education, and outreach goals. CNMA invites the Grand Valley community to be a part of this monumental effort and hopes to commemorate the 60th milestone with many during the special events.
