Colorado Girl Scouts can sell their cookies in front of marijuana dispensaries now

There's good news for Colorado residents prone to munchies: as of Friday, you only need to make one stop to get both Girl Scout Cookies and weed.

Girl Scouts of Colorado updated its cookie sales policy to allow Girl Scouts to sell their boxes outside of cannabis dispensaries.

This is a change of heart for the organization, which previously banned setting up cookie booths in front of dispensaries. In a deleted tweet from 2014, its Colorado council stated, "If you are wondering, we don't allow our Girl Scouts to sell cookies in front of marijuana shops or liquor stores/bars."

Under the new policy, Colorado's Girl Scouts will be allowed to set up cookie booths in front of previously-banned "adult-oriented" places, like dispensaries, bars, and tattoo parlors. In an email, Girl Scouts of Colorado spokesperson AnneMarie Harper said that it's up to parents and guardians to discern whether or not a business is appropriate for cookie sales.

“Local councils and leaders are best situated to set safety parameters in keeping with the well being of girls engaging in the cookie sale in their communities,” she told the Cannabist

"Safety parameters" include the booth's distance from roads and parking lots. Girl Scouts would also need permission from business owners and property owners before setting up booths in front of dispensaries.

Despite the success of cookies sales at pot shops, Harper said the change was not prompted by "an overwhelming number of requests to sell at dispensaries."

"This change was made to allow troop leaders and families to determine the best location for My Sales with proper approval," she said.

Although recreational marijuana is legal in other states, such as California and Washington, Harper said she can't speak for whether Girl Scouts nationwide will be allowed to peddle their sugary wares at dispensaries.

"Girl Scouts of Colorado reminds all participants that when you are selling Girl Scout Cookies," she said, "You are representing Girl Scouts."
