Coloradans can track their favorite snow plow on COTrip

(COLORADO) — As the end of the snowstorm is approaching, the state’s snow plows are out in full force, and Coloradans can track their progress on COtrip, and maybe find a favorite.

When navigating the COtrip site, which is run by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), a menu shows up on the map labeled “Layers” and “Legend” on the right-hand side of the map for desktop browsers, and in a drop-down for the mobile site. Users can mark the boxes to filter what conditions they want to display, and one of those options is the Plow Tracker. Once activated, little blue dots with plow icons will show up wherever a snow plow is currently operating.

Users can click on the dot to access information about the plow, which shows up on the left-hand side of the desktop, and pops up at the bottom for mobile. Information about the plows includes the road they are plowing, their general location, and the direction they are heading.

And a special easter egg for those willing to hunt; a few of the plows have names. Listed along with the truck’s location, a select few will display names, such as “No-way Sno-day”, “Sprinkles”, “Darth Blader” and “Plowzilla”. Named plows are only visible when the truck goes online for its shift, so different plows are visible at different times.

According to CDOT, there are 22 celebrity trucks in total, and the monikers are a result of a 2021 contest called “Name that Plow”, where kids across Colorado entered over 1,100 ideas before the 22 winners were chosen.

For those who wish to track the progress of the plowing efforts on Colorado’s highways, while seeking a star plow to admire, go to the COtrip website, or download the COtrip Planner app.
