Colombian armed groups seize helicopter carrying $500,000
BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Colombia's military is attempting to rescue three employees of a global cash transfer company who were kidnapped last week after their helicopter was forced to land in a remote area of the country while carrying the equivalent of $500,000 in cash.
The three captives work for Brinks, a Richmond, Virginia-based company with clients in more than 100 countries.
Colombian Army commander Nicasio Martinez said on Monday that adverse weather conditions forced the helicopter to land in a remote area of North Santander province, where former guerilla fighters and paramilitary groups are fighting over drug trafficking routes.
Martinez said he's not sure which of the armed groups operating in the area captured the Brinks employees and took their cargo. But he believes the captives are in good health.
