Coldwater Swap Meet supports Branch County Sexual Assault Services

Every Mother’s Day, the Branch County Fair is filled with old cars, parts, arts and crafts, great food and lots of hard working volunteers.

The annual Coldwater Swap Meet and Car Show was up and running this year, with perfect weather and hundreds of people gathered to see the old cars, hear the muffler rap, buy parts, eat great “fair” food, and watch the cruise through town.

One of the things that make this event so special is that all of the proceeds are donated back to the community to nonprofit organizations.

Branch County Sexual Assault Services at ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital was one of the organizations chosen to receive a donation from the Swap Meet and Car Show.

BCSAS is a specialty unit staffed by forensic nurses Laura Kopacz, Lynda Hooley, Cassie Tong and Lori Tipton. These nurses provide all victims of sexual assault and domestic violence with medical/forensic examinations, evidence collection, injury identification, photographs and referral information.

Because of the donation from the Swap Meet and Car Show, BCSAS was able to update its domestic violence program, purchase special information folders and update important included materials.

The folders are geared towards keeping domestic violence victims safe. Some of the materials included in the folders are a Safety Assessment, Community Resource Numbers, Pet Safety Information, and Victims’ Rights.

Recently the forensic nurses met downtown Coldwater for a lunch at the newly-opened “Hope Care” by the Branch County Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence. They discussed the new folders and materials for their domestic violence patients seen at ProMedica.
