Some things are just necessary.
Other things however, well, you just can't help yourself.
So when Stephen Colbert saw Donald Trump announcing his presidential candidacy on Tuesday, he surely thought: "I have to, don't I? I just have to."
So he prepared a YouTube video to announce that Donald Trump has announced.
Standing on a podium that featured the slogan: "Colbert. Shut Up, Dummy," Colbert evinced a gravitas that reflected the seriousness of this moment in history.
"This will be the finest, most luxurious, gold-plated, diamond-encrusted campaign that will give hope to a weary nation," he said.
More Technically Incorrect
He admitted, though, that there's a secret motive in announcing Trump's announcement. Colbert is about to begin hosting "The Late Show" on CBS (disclosure: CNET is owned by CBS) in September.
He's delighted, therefore, to use this announcement to also announce that he will still be hosting "The Late Show."
He did take the time to perform a magic trick. He took the time to discuss the GDP, bicycle racing, hats and RoboHitler.
Finally he posed with certain lady friends who may or may have included his wife.
How different was this from Trump's own announcement? Not very.
