Cancer patient’s life upended moving to the Wiregrass
COFFEE COUNTY, Ala. (WDHN) — Roy and Janice Horn are pleading for the community’s help in finding a moving trailer filled with precious memories after someone went onto their property and took it.
The Horns moved to their home off AL-87 in Coffee County from Illinois, a home that needed repairs, but somewhere they could call home for the rest of their lives.
“They had big plans to take their life savings, move down here, and just live out the rest of their lives,” Daughter of Roy and Janice, Kris Mucho-Burger said.
When they got to the Wiregrass, Janice was gravely ill and was diagnosed with Stage 4 Lung Cancer. During the renovation process of their home, one of their two moving trailers on their property disappeared on Monday in the middle of the day while Roy was at the doctor’s office and Janice was in the house.
“The trailer they chose was the furthest inset on the property, so we believe that whoever took the trailer had intimate knowledge of the property and how the trailers were positioned,” Mucho-Burger said.
In the trailer were framed family pictures, heirlooms, small furniture items, a queen-sized mattress, and a desk. Items that the family considers irreplaceable.”
“My mother values all of those special things that her kids and grandkids had given to her over the years,” Mucho-Burger said. “We just want her memories back. That’s what is breaking her heart.”
A tragic event that Mucho-Burger says goes against everything they learned growing up in the Horn household, which was, “To do the right thing and be honest and you will have rewards beyond recognition.”
“Being raised with those values and then having this is a huge sucker punch to all the values and morals our family holds dear,” Mucho-Burger said.
The family asks that someone come forward in the case and drop off the items the family has held dear for generations.
The Coffee County Sheriff’s Office has been investigating the incident.
