Cockfight in San Joaquin County orchard broken up; six people arrested

(FOX40.COM) — Deputies who responded to a call of people trespassing discovered an organized cockfight, which led to the arrest of several people and the confiscation of several roosters and other items, according to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office.

The agency said that on May 19, the call came in about the trespassers east of the community of Linden, about 20 miles east of Stockton.

When deputies arrived, several vehicles and individuals fled, but six people were detained, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies also located “evidence of rooster fighting,” including a temporary ring made of plywood, gaffs (sharp blades that attach to a rooster’s legs), and multiple roosters.

Pictures shared by the sheriff’s office show several gaffs, with at least one of them bloodied, leather strips, string, tape and other materials, the temporary ring set up in the middle of orchard trees, and one of the injured roosters.

The sheriff’s office said that animal services assisted with the roosters and that the six individuals arrested face charges of animal abuse, trespassing, conspiracy to commit a crime, possession of a gamecock for fighting and possession of implements for fighting birds.

The sheriff’s office asks anyone who has information about these types of events to report them. Callers can dial the sheriff’s office non-emergency line at 209-468-4400 and can remain anonymous.
