Cobblestone apartment fire ruled accidental

May 20—A multi-unit apartment fire Sunday night at Cobblestone Apartments has been ruled accidental, according to Tom High, Honey Creek Fire Department fire chief.

Further tests are underway to determine the exact cause, he said Monday. There may be additional information at a later time.

Multiple agencies responded to the two-story fire at about 9 p.m. Sunday at Cobblestone Apartments in southern Vigo County.

No one was injured, and the fire in the 1900 block of Cobblestone Way was under control by about 10 p.m., High said.

Four apartments were destroyed and residents of those apartments were displaced; it was not immediately known how many total residents were affected.

The four units were located on the northwest side of a larger complex.

The Honey Creek Fire department has lead the investigation, and the State Fire Marshal's office was called to assist.

Crews arriving on scene attempted an offensive attack, High said, but the fire was on the second floor and proceeded into the attic.

"We pulled everybody out and went defensive," High said. "It was through the roof very shortly after we got here."

Several agencies assisted, including fire departments from Terre Haute, Riley, Sugar Creek, Seelyville and Prairieton. Also assisting were Vigo County Sheriff's Office and Trans Care. The Red Cross also responded.

As of 10:30 p.m., multiple units were still on scene and many residents of Cobblestone were outside watching events unfold.

All units left the scene around 1 a.m. Monday, High said.

The damages could have been much worse, High said, and he credited the efforts of all fire crews at the scene in getting the fire under control.

"We train on this stuff all the time and the crews did a fantastic job," he said. He also praised assisting agencies.
