Coast Guard rescues man from cruise ship off Oregon Coast

A U.S. Coast Guard aircrew from Astoria rescued an injured passenger from a cruise ship far off the coast of Oregon on Thursday.

The 65-year-old man had received an injury a few days prior and needed higher medical care. He was on board the Koningsdam, which was on its way from Hawaii to Victoria, Canada.

The crew hoisted him from the ship, which was located 175 miles west of Tillamook’s shore, and took him to Oregon Health & Science University Hospital in Portland.

“It’s pretty unique, because that was very far out,” Petty Officer Steve Strohmaier said. “Some of these rescues we’re doing are only 10, 15, 20 miles out, but a cruise ship that’s pretty far out does require a lot more logistics and planning.

“And we’re just happy that we also were able to bring our Life Flight people with us and they assisted during the transit.”
