CNM offering free catalytic converter etchings on Saturday

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Central New Mexico Community College and Triple-A Community College are offering catalytic converter etchings this weekend. The event will be held at the Ted Chavez Building on CNM’s campus from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, in 2022 there were more than 64,000 catalytic converter thefts across the country. And this type of crime is really costly for a vehicle owner. To replace a catalytic converter, it can cost between $1,500 and $7,500,” said AAA New Mexico Corporate Communications Manager Doug Shupe.

Etching the vehicle VIN onto the catalytic converter makes it easier for law enforcement to track the stolen devices and makes it harder for thieves to sell them.
