CM Punk on why he wouldn't visit Trump's White House: 'A racist is a racist'
In the days since President Donald Trump disinvited the Philadelphia Eagles from their scheduled White House visit, athletes across the entire sports landscape have provided their thoughts on the matter.
UFC fighters have now been included in the mix.
Phil “CM Punk” Brooks and several other fighters were interviewed ahead of Saturday night’s UFC 225. They were asked whether or not they would visit if invited, and Punk was quick to answer.
“No. 1, I would not be invited,” Punk told FanSided MMA, “and No. 2, no, I would not go.
“If David Duke invites me over for tacos, I’m not going to David Duke’s house, you know what I mean? Come on, I call it like I see it. A racist is a racist. I don’t care if you’re in the White House or you live down the street from me. Like, I’m not hanging out with you.”
No. 8 women’s strawweight contender Felice Herrig said she would visit the White House if invited. So, too, did flyweight contender Joseph Benavidez. Rashad Coulter, a UFC heavyweight, said he was “on the fence” on what he would do.
And after seconds of pause, Rashad Evans said he would not attend if invited.
“It’s all for show,” Evans said. “I don’t know Donald Trump — I met him once — but politics are politics.”
