Clovis man sentenced to nine and a half years after fleeing officer

CLOVIS, N.M. (KRQE) – A 27-year-old man, Anthony Abeyta, has received a sentence of over nine years in prison for aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer, according to the Ninth Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Earlier this year, a jury found Abeyta guilty of aggravated fleeing after leading Curry County Sheriff Officers on a chase in a truck they say was stolen. He was initially accused of aggravated fleeing, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, and reckless driving, court records show.

After a prosecutor dismissed the reckless driving charge, the jury found Abeyta guilty of aggravated fleeing, but not guilty of unlawful taking of a motor vehicle. Now, Abeyta will spend nine and a half years in prison, followed by one year of supervised parole. He will also have to serve a six year sentence for a previous probation violation, the Ninth Judicial District Attorney’s Office says.
