Clovis man in hospital after low-speed pursuit through city

May 18—A Clovis man was taken to a Lubbock hospital after receiving self-inflicted wounds during a Monday incident that involved a low-speed pursuit through the city.

Clovis Police Department Captain Roman Romero reports at about 6: 40 p.m. Monday CPD officers were dispatched to 410 East 10th Street for a report of a trespass.

Romero wrote in a report the caller reported the suspect had driven off with the caller's truck.

The caller alleged the suspect had said, "if the 'cops' were called he wasn't going down without a fight."

Officers engaged in a short vehicle pursuit with the suspect at about 6:46 p.m for a couple of minutes before halting as it was decided the suspect's driving endangered the public.

CPD Officers returned to East 10th Street address to make contact with the caller.

The suspect returned to the home.

Romero wrote officers deployed tire deflation sticks near the tires of the truck.

The suspect drove away from the scene and a second pursuit began, according to Romero.

Romero wrote that because some tires had been deflated, the suspect led officers on a low-speed pursuit, returning to the area of 10th Street repeatedly.

More deflation sticks were deployed, "ultimately deflating all of the truck's tires," according to Romero.

The truck's driver's side window had been broken.

At about 7:33 p,m., the vehicle stopped in the 1300 block of Axtell.

The suspect refused to get out of the vehicle, according to Romero.

The suspect was armed with a knife and a screwdriver that had been altered into a spear point.

According to Romero, The suspect began stabbing himself in the chest and neck with the weapons.

Clovis Fire Department Emergency Medical Services were deployed to the area to assist the suspect once he was secured.

Officers began talking to the suspect, asking him to drop the weapons and exit the vehicle.

The suspect refused to comply.

Romero reports while Officers were talking to the suspect, he continually poked himself with the weapons and scratched across the area of his wrist.

Romero wrote based on the continuing self-harm, the unknown damage he had done to his body when he initially stabbed himself, and the unproductive nature of the interaction, an immediate action plan was enacted.

At about 8:21 p.m., with the assistance of the Curry County Sheriff's deputies, a taser was deployed at the suspect.

Romero reports the taser "performed its duties," allowing officers to extract him from the vehicle and secure him in handcuffs.

The suspect was immediately seen by Emergency Medical Services and was transported to Plains Regional Medical Center due to his self-inflicted injuries. PRMC then transferred the suspect to a Lubbock area hospital.

The suspect faces charges of robbery, aggravated fleeing, battery on a household member, criminal trespass, and resisting, evading, or obstructing an officer.

Romero reports the suspect will be taken into custody on his release from the hospital.

Wednesday's Curry County Detention Center record did not list the suspect in the jail population.
