Cloudy weather ensures round-the-clock rolling blackouts on May 24

As overcast weather continues to limit solar generation, rolling blackout schedules will remain in effect across Ukraine on May 24, power grid operator Ukrenergo announced on May 23.

Restrictions on power supply will apply to both industrial and residential consumers.

Ukrenergo explained that the restrictions are being introduced due to rainy weather and dense cloud cover, which prevent solar power plants from operating at full capacity. As a result, electricity shortages persist even during daylight hours, the company added.

Existing generation capacity covers only 75% of electricity demand in Kyiv City as of May 23, according to DTEK power utility company.

On sunny days, such as May 21, rolling blackouts are in place only in peak evening and nighttime hours.
