What the closure of 150 Macy's stores means for Fayetteville

Macy's announcement in February that 150 of its "underperforming" stores would close left many wondering about the fate of Fayetteville's Macy's at Cross Creek Mall.

Wonder no more. According to a statement from Macy's corporate office Thursday, the local Macy's has escaped the chopping block.

"We look forward to continuing to serve our customers at Macy's Cross Creek Mall," according to the statement.

The statement said Macy's plan to boost profits and to "enhance the customer experience" involves closing about 150 Macy's stores over the next three years.

This is not the first time the fate of Macy's at Cross Creek has been questioned. Nearly seven years ago, then-CFO Karen Hoguet announced that the company would close 100 locations because they were "underperforming and not in good locations for the long term."

Macy's came to Fayetteville in 2006 after Macy's parent company bought Hecht's parent company and converted the Cross Creek Mall Hecht's into a Macy's a year later. At the time, the mall also held Sears, JCPenny and Belk. Sears has since closed.

The Fayetteville Macy's is one of seven in North Carolina.
