Closer look at Bowie State University’s new Esports Center

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — Bowie State University opened a new electronic sports center on Feb. 8, giving students a chance to earn money while also relieving stress.

The $575,000 investment is also allowing the university to compete among other schools, while attracting new applicants, and there is now an effort in the works to bring esports into the classroom.

“The academic program that we’re starting, we’re hoping will be a feeder into our esports. We’re hoping that students who want to major in game design will want to become esports athletes,” said Maurice Tyler, Bowie State’s Vice President of Information Technology.

The center includes 12 gaming stations, an e-racing simulator, a robot known as Astro which works with Alexa and more.

“We think it’s going to be great for our students, and the morale and their mental well being. I do want to say it’s not just a guy sport, we do have female athletes as well,” Tyler said.

Bowie State University graduate student and ROTC member, Jacquai Bell, is taking advantage of the esports center.

“It’s kind of like an outlet for me to have fun. It’s kind of helping me stay balanced and blow off some steam,” he said. “It helps with my academics for scholarship money.”
