What’s closed in Buffalo during the total solar eclipse?

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — On April 8, the moon will completely block out the sun in a rare celestial event: a total solar eclipse.

As Western New York prepares for hundreds of thousands of visitors to view the event, multiple schools, government offices and destinations have announced they will be closed Monday. Here are some of the closures around the area for eclipse day:

Schools

A number of school districts around Western New York have canceled classes on Monday in anticipation of the total solar eclipse. Among the most notable are:

  • Amherst Central Schools

  • Buffalo Public Schools

  • Batavia City Schools

  • Cheektowaga Central Schools

  • Clarence Central Schools

  • Frontier Central Schools

  • Grand Island Central Schools

  • Hamburg Central Schools

  • Jamestown Public Schools

  • Ken-Ton Schools

  • Lancaster Central Schools

  • Niagara Falls City Schools

  • North Tonawanda City Schools

  • Orchard Park Central Schools

  • Starpoint Central Schools

  • West Seneca Central Schools

  • Williamsville Central Schools

Some colleges in the area have also canceled classes, including:

  • University at Buffalo (No in-person)

  • Buffalo State University

  • Daemen University

  • SUNY Erie Community College

  • SUNY Fredonia

  • SUNY Niagara

  • Villa Maria College

Government offices

The following government offices will be closed or will close early on Monday:

  • Allegany County offices (Closing at noon)

  • Buffalo City Hall

  • Buffalo Immigration Court

  • Chautauqua County offices (Closing at noon)

  • Genesee County (Closing at noon)

  • Niagara County offices except Board of Elections

  • Niagara Falls City Hall (Closing at noon)

  • Lackawanna City Hall (Closing at noon)

  • Wyoming County (Number of offices closing at noon)

Destinations, businesses

In addition to schools and offices, other locations in Western New York will close to the public on Monday, including:

Garbage pickup

  • Buffalo – Trash and recycling pickups delayed by one day during week of eclipse

  • Lackawanna – Bulk trash pickup moved from Monday to April 15
