On Monday, 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton introduced her $350 billion college affordability plan. The proposal includes measures to reduce the cost of four-year public schools, make two-year community colleges free and lower the interest rates of student loans. Two days later, she asked her supporters to express their feelings about their student loan debt — with emoji.
How does your student loan debt make you feel? Tell us in 3 emojis or less.
— Hillary Clinton (@HillaryClinton)
And, as is Twitter’s wont, the reaction was swift and merciless. Grammar nerds were quick to point out her incorrect use of “less” in reference to countable objects:
Not to mention that the correct plural form of “emoji” is “emoji”:
.@HillaryClinton, the plural of emoji is “emoji.” it’s like pokemon
— Asawin Suebsaeng (@swin24)
Others mocked the pandering-to-youth aspect of the tweet:
— Danielle Kurtzleben (@titonka)
— Ziwe (@Ziweeee)
“Hillary, The Youths are surprisingly aware of market capitalism’s failure to provide upward mobility. What do we do?” “FIND ME GRUMPY CAT.”
— Matthias Ellis (@matthiasellis)
I love you but we don’t need you to do this. RT: @HillaryClinton How does your student loan debt make you feel? Tell us in 3 emojis or less.
— Mike Scollins (@mikescollins)
Some felt the call to emoji was condescending:
You guys know we can use emojis on occasion but then also have articulate discussions about economic matters, right? @HillaryClinton
— Brooklyn Middleton (@BklynMiddleton)
“Please, send me hilarious emoji reactions while you wallow in debt. I want to know how it feels!” - @HillaryClinton
— Cocky McSwagsalot (@MoreAndAgain)
@HillaryClinton What is the emoji tryptic for ‘This is a very nuanced issue that should probably be discussed in actual words’
— Chuck Cotterman (@MrCott)
.@HillaryClinton You know what people who went to college can use? Words.
— Louisa (@LouisatheLast)
Of course, there were the requisite email scandal jabs:
@HillaryClinton How does finally handing over your server to federal investigators make you feel? Tell us in 3 emojis or less.
— Ben Jacobs (@Bencjacobs)
People, only send @HillaryClinton your emoji if you’re comfortable with the Russians, Chinese and Sid Blumenthal seeing them.
— Seth Mandel (@SethAMandel)
Some users expressed exasperation (without emoji):
Emojis? Seriously? And you wanna be president “@HillaryClinton: How does your student loan debt make you feel? Tell us in 3 emojis or less.”
— Lukanyo (@lukanyo_)
Not to worry, Hillary. At least one person wants to help:
