Donald Trump was a typically aggressive presence throughout the 2016 presidential debates with Hilary Clinton, often lashing out at his rival as he sulked and loomed about the stage.

Clinton, on the other hand, always managed to keep calm and cool, even as her once hopeful campaign threatened to collapse around her.

That isn’t to say that The Donald’s spiteful barbs didn’t get to her, though. According to a new book by New York Times writer Amy Chozick, Hilary Clinton would launch into foul-mouthed, anti-Trump tirades before she entered the debates.

“Aides understood that in order to keep it all together onstage, Hillary sometimes needed to unleash on them in private,” Chozick writes in ‘Chasing Hillary: Ten Years, Two Presidential Campaigns and One Intact Glass Ceiling’. The Guardian obtained an early copy of the book.

The book reveals that the presidential candidate was furious that her authenticity had been called in the question by political commentators across the political divide.

“‘You want authentic, here it is!’ she’d yelled in one prep session, followed by a fuck-laced fusillade about what a ‘disgusting’ human being Trump was and how he didn’t deserve to even be in the arena.”

The book also details how Clinton's team struggled to build a message with as much coherence and cultural impact as Trump's 'Make America Great Again' slogan. Rejected pitches included “You’ve earned a fair chance”, “A new bargain we can count on” and “No quit”.
