Clifton shooting incident ends in juvenile arrests

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — Two juveniles were taken into custody Tuesday night following reports of a shooting in Clifton.

Mesa County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the 300 block of 3rd Street after a resident called to report being shot at. The victim told officials three masked suspects exited a parked car and pointed firearms at him as he was leaving his house. After a brief exchange, one suspect fired his weapon; the victim was not injured.

The three suspects fled the area in the vehicle and were quickly located by deputies who conducted a high-risk traffic stop. Three juveniles were detained at the stop, where a firearm was found inside the vehicle in plain sight. A fourth juvenile suspect was later found at a Grand Junction residence; deputies executed a search warrant and found another firearm in the residence.

Two of the juveniles were taken into custody and transported to the Division of Youth Services on the following charges:

  • Felony menacing

  • Conspiracy

  • Possession of a handgun by a juvenile

  • Prohibited use of weapons

The other two juveniles were released to their parents.

The suspects are all known to the victim, and officials say it’s possible the incident could be related to gang activity.

This investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be filed. Mesa County Sheriff’s Office asks anyone with any information about this case — or if you suspect your teen may be involved in gang-related activity — to call the sheriff’s office at 970-242-6707 or submit an anonymous tip.
