Cleveland woman gives away $1M each to 10 local charities in death

VALLEY VIEW, Ohio (WJW) — There’s always a reason to cheer on the incredible people at Our Lady of the Wayside.

But on Tuesday, there is exactly one million reasons why the non-profit is cheering at their  Valley View location.

When Cleveland native Carol Glowe died two years ago, her brother took charge of her estate thinking there wouldn’t be a whole lot to do.

What were the red bursts coming from behind the moon during the eclipse?

“When she passed, she was living in just a little house and with an old car. At Christmas time, we would say ‘maybe we ought to give her a little bit,'” said Carol’s brother, Jim Bauer.

But was Jim in for a big surprise.

“When I first started out, it was like, oh there’s $5,000, there’s $10,000, whoa, there is a million” he shared.

In total, Carol’s estate is worth around $10 million.

Her dying wish was to give 10 different local organizations $1 million each.

Carol’s generosity will create new opportunity at Our Lady of the Wayside (and nine other charities). All of the money will be used to purchase four wheelchair accessible vans, helping their clients with disabilities enjoy some free time away from the building.

On hand to receive Carol’s donation was Our Lady of the Wayside CEO Terry Davis.

“We say gifts like this are pennies from heaven. There is the Glowe family and other families that have made these donations, you just never know,” Davis said.

As for Jim, well, he knew his sister better than anyone. Now, he’s helping make sure her legacy lives on in Northeast Ohio for years to come.

“And when you give to people, you feel such joy in your life. I mean, it’s unbelievable,” Jim said.
