Cleveland detective critically injured in paragliding accident returns to work

CLEVELAND (WJW) – Cleveland Police Detective Ashley Schut says she is so grateful to be back at the job she loves.

Just a few weeks ago, she returned to her job at Cleveland’s Fourth District, something some thought she may not be able to do.

In October, she was critically injured in a paragliding accident in Utah. One man was killed.

“I don’t remember the accident at all,” Schut told the I-Team Tuesday. “I don’t remember the impact, I don’t remember falling, I don’t remember getting life-flighted to the hospital.”

She spent weeks in a hospital in Utah, with her husband at her side.

In November, Jet ICU brought her back home at no charge. The former college athlete spent months continuing to recover from the accident that nearly left her paralyzed.

“I am still doing a lot of strengthening,” Schut said. “Especially my legs, since I was not able to walk for a while.”

She said her faith in God helped her never to lose hope. She said she never doubted that she would be okay.

“Regardless of the outcome, our hope was that He would be glorified,” Schut said. “We truly believe that people prayed a lot for us. We believe that those prayers had a big part in the peace that we had.”

She is currently on light duty.

“My understanding is she is a great detective,” said Sgt. Wilfredo Diaz, Cleveland Police Public Information Officer. “We are so happy she is back. I know the city of Cleveland will also be happy to have her back serving our citizens.”

Schut also wanted to thank everyone for all the love and support she has received.

“People were so generous with their prayers, with giving to us, some people we didn’t even know,” Schut said. “We felt so well taken care of, we are so thankful.”
