The Cleveland County Democratic Party is showing off their new space this month with an open house event.

The headquarters, located in the former J-Birds Deli & Ales, at 106 W. Marion St., in Shelby, will host a drop-in from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Kent Blevins, chair of the CCDP, said they wanted to do an all day drop-in so people could stop by on their lunch break or after work.

He said the open house will give an opportunity for the community to learn what is going on with the Cleveland County Democratic Party, find information on upcoming events, get voting information and offer the chance to invite people to join the party's efforts, if they'd like.

"People can see stuff we have going on and opportunities to get involved if they would like to do that," Blevins said.

Blevins said the Cleveland County Democratic Party recently launched an adopt a highway program, and the new headquarters are the perfect location.

"This has been in the works a very long time. It just recently was approved," he said.

The party has adopted the section of Marion Street that starts where the road runs into U.S. 74 and goes all the way to the Hive Coffee drive-through location. He said it is around two miles total. There will be at least four litter sweeps a year, and anyone interested in volunteering can find more information at the open house.

There will be a public event on May 2 with Mo Green, candidate for North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction, coming to speak. The event will be held at the Bobby Bell Pavilion at 5:30 p.m.

Blevins said there will be smaller events at the new headquarters, such as candidate training for members, voter registration, volunteer opportunities and more. There will also be a 50/50 raffle fundraiser with a $10,000 prize.

Blevins said people can also find out information on the Cleveland County Democratic Party and keep up with upcoming events on their website, clevelandcountydemocraticparty.com.
