Clemson defensive end Richard Yeargin out for season after car crash
Clemson said Monday that defensive end Richard Yeargin would miss the 2017 season after he sustained a neck injury in a car crash over the weekend.
“Richard suffered the same type of injury that Mike Williams had in 2015 as the result of an automobile accident over the weekend,” Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said in a statement. “The good news is that he will be fine long term. He will miss this season as he recovers.”
Yeargin tweeted a link to Instagram thanking people earlier Monday morning. But the Instagram post was deleted.
Williams, a wide receiver who was a first-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft, suffered a fractured vertebra in his neck in 2015 when he crashed awkwardly into the goalpost padding while making a touchdown catch. The injury, which happened in September, sideline Williams for the entire season. He came back in 2016 and was one of the best wide receivers in college football, catching 98 passes for 1,361 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Yeargin was set to be a member of Clemson’s defensive line rotation as a redshirt junior in 2017. He had 14 tackles as the Tigers won the national title in 2016 and had 15 tackles as a redshirt freshman in 2015. He’ll have the option of taking a medical redshirt for the 2017 season and still have two seasons of eligibility when he returns in 2018.
