Cleanup, repairs underway in Woodlands neighborhood following severe weather

PACE, Fla. (WKRG) — Cleanup and repairs are underway for many residents in the Woodlands neighborhood in Pace following Wednesday’s severe weather event.

“There was debris all over the place,” Woodlands resident Joseph McCarthy said. “There was trash cans, some sheds apparently had blown off their moorings.”

The National Weather Service in Mobile confirmed Thursday an EF-1 tornado came through the area, with winds up to 105 MPH. Residents say those winds were startling.

“I told my wife, ‘We better go find someplace safe,'” McCarthy said. “So we went to our utility room, waited there for about five minutes. You could hear the wind howling; it was very intense. We were both pretty nervous.”

“All of a sudden the wind intensity picked up tremendously and it just blew through very fast in about five minutes and all this damage you see is the result,” Jim Cate, another Woodlands resident, told News 5.

Santa Rosa County officials told News 5 that a damage assessment conducted in the neighborhood revealed about two dozen homes suffered minor damage. The damage was mostly to roofs and fences.

“It got real dark, and the rain was blowing sideways, and the tree gradually blew over and then uprooted,” Cate said.

A scary situation for residents that could have been much worse.

“We’re thankful for the Lord’s safety, took care of us,” McCarthy said.

County officials said no one was injured.
