Clean Energy Alliance adds service to Oceanside, Vista

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Power provider Clean Energy Alliance on Monday announced it is adding service to two new cities in North County.

Oceanside and Vista joins CEA, along with existing members Carlsbad, Del Mar, Escondido, San Marcos and Solana Beach, the nonprofit entity said in a press release.

“Across the member cities, CEA replaces SDG&E as the entity responsible for purchasing power from energy providers,” CEA said. “SDG&E continues to deliver this energy to homes and businesses and continues to handle all energy billing.”

The move comes as SDG&E rates remain a hot topic among San Diegans. Last year, SDG&E alone earned a record $936 million, according to a filing from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Some options for CEA customers in Oceanside and Vista include automatically being enrolled in Clean Impact Plus, a plan that provides 50% renewable and 75% carbon-free energy, according to the energy provider. Customers can also opt up to Green Impact (100% renewable energy), opt down to Clean Impact (50% renewable energy) or opt out to remain with SDG&E.

Anyone previously enrolled in SDG&E discount plans will get the same benefits of CEA. Customers with solar panels are also eligible for a separate plan.

“The cities of Carlsbad, Del Mar and Solana Beach joined forces to form CEA back in 2019,” CEA Board Chair David Druker said. “Our cross-city collaboration was kickstarted by efforts to meet emission reduction goals and be a resource in our member cities meeting their climate action plan goals. CEA allows for more local control — since CEA’s Board is made up of city council members from the 7 member agencies.”

Oceanside and Vista customers will still receive one bill from SDG&E for all energy services, which includes CEA’s charges for power generation.
