City of Tampa to start fining people who leave eScooters on street

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The city of Tampa is taking new measures to discourage people from leaving eScooters and eBikes stranded on on the street.

According to a Monday release, the city said it was putting stricter rules that would require riders to park the e-vehicles in city-approved docking stations starting on April 1.

The eScooters and eBikes will be fitting with new software that will alert riders where they can park the micro vehicles. If stranded, these riders would face an “out-of-hub” fee, which would vary up to $5.

“Docking stations include clearly marked corrals, electronic virtual corrals, public bike racks, scooter racks and charging stations,” the release said. “Hundreds of these approved docking stations will be conveniently located in the public right-of-way all over the city so riders will have no trouble finding or parking their shared e-vehicles. We’ve also set up an interactive website where residents can request locations where they feel corrals would be beneficial.”

Aside from the punishment, the city will also be giving riders who dock abandoned scooters and bikes in the stations a credit ranging from $.50 to $2.50.

Shared micro-mobility vehicles will not be allowed in the following areas: the Tampa Riverwalk, Bayshore Boulevard, 7th Ave. (Ybor City), Hyde Park Village, and Armature Works.
