City of Sweetwater works with school district to expand childcare

It was revealed on Tuesday that out of the roughly 2,500 children (0-12) residing in Nolan County, there were only 405 spots in daycares across the five Nolan County cities.

On Wednesday, the Sweetwater City Council approved an interlocal agreement which will expand Sweetwater ISD’s childcare spots from 53 to 112.

Those 112 spots will be available to any child in the area, and is not limited to children of Sweetwater ISD faculty or staff.

Licensing to more than double current childcare capacity is pending at this time.

To help reach this goal, Sweetwater Economic Development has promised $150,000 to the school district’s daycare expansion project.

If all goes as planned, those 59 new spots will be made available by the end of this summer.
