City Sandwich to reopen under new ownership

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — City Sandwich Co., which closed earlier this year, is planning to reopen this month under new ownership and with the blessing of the family that ran the popular lunchtime spot for decades on Mt. Vernon Avenue.

“The opportunity for my family has lined up in such a way that it has felt like God’s intention,” reads a March 28 post from new owners Tom and Kelly Edwards on The Original City Sandwich Company Facebook page.

“The goal of the Edward’s family is to bring back a welcoming refreshing family spot that we hope you can enjoy with yours,” says the post, adding the same recipes will be used.

In a reply, Jason Wikoff, whose family started the shop and who worked there for decades before moving to Tennessee in 2020, where he opened a City Sandwich in Tullahoma, wrote, “Thank you Kelly and Tom for resurrecting a very special part of east Bakersfield! My Dad would be smiling!”

The restaurant had a thriving business for years, with customers queuing up to order tangy potato salad and well-constructed sandwiches on soft rolls with choice of meat and vinegar, olive oil and shredded cabbage.

The most recent owner closed the shop Jan. 15 and opened a new restaurant, Honey I’m Home, on Auburn Street.
