City purchases property for new Police Station

Apr. 16—The City of Richmond has purchased a property for the new police station.

According to Richmond Chief of Police, Rodney Richardson, the city purchased the property right behind the current police station at 1721 Lexington Road. The commission did it by a unanimous vote.

"Perfect spot for our new headquarters," Richardson said.

The city currently has a $212,400 hold for the property while preparations are to build on the six-acre plot. That hold is for easement and moving utilities off of the area prior to the sale's completion.

Richardson told the Register the property the city is situated between the current Police HQ and Red Roof Inn that sits on Bahama Court.

Richmond's new public safety building is set to be worth $2.1 million and will reside on that six-acre plot of land.

"We did an extensive property search," City Manager Rob Minerich told the commission.

The city considered multiple properties on the Bypass but passed on those due to being "off the beaten path from where we need to be," according to Minerich.

The city also considered the property between the current police station and the Clarion Pointe at 1751 Lexington Road. That property didn't have the acreage and was looking for what the city will pay for the six-acre lot.

Once the new public safety building is completed, the current Police HQ will be taken over by the city's codes enforcement and risk management departments.
