City proposes updates to building codes

Mar. 22—The City of Athens is proposing an update of its building codes to the 2021 International Building Codes and the 2020 National Electrical Code with amendments recommended by the North Central Texas Council of Governments.

The City currently operates under the 2014 International Electrical Code and the 2015 International Code Series.

"The proposed updates to the building codes demonstrate our commitment to ensuring the safety and efficiency of new construction projects," said Director of Development Services Audrey Sloan. "By adopting these new codes, we are taking a proactive approach in keeping up with evolving industry standards and best practices."

In general, building codes are updated regularly to reflect changing building performance objectives such as energy efficiency or natural hazard resistance.

These updates will apply to new construction projects once they are approved by the City Council.

Microsoft upgrades its AI app-building platforms
Microsoft's big focus at this year's Build conference is generative AI. Azure AI Studio is a toolset within Microsoft's Azure OpenAI Service that lets customers combine an AI model like OpenAI’s recently announced GPT-4o with their own data and build a chat assistant or another type of app that "reasons over" that data. Copilot Studio, meanwhile, provides tools to connect Copilot for Microsoft 365 -- the AI-powered "copilot" in apps like Excel, Word and PowerPoint as well as Microsoft’s Edge browser and Windows -- to third-party data.
