City of New Orleans to study local nightlife ecosystem

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The City of New Orleans has announced the launch of a new study aimed at gathering information and data about New Orleans’ nightlife to help with the formation of future policies.

City leaders said the Mayor’s Office of Nighttime Economy is launching a New Orleans Music Census in collaboration with Austin-based firm Sound Music Cities.

They said the study is designed to gather “comprehensive data to support future policymaking for the city’s vibrant nightlife ecosystem.”

City officials said the New Orleans Music Census will survey venues, musicians, nonprofits and others involved in the city’s music ecosystem to collect data on the living and working conditions of local nightlife contributors.

“The investment in this study highlights the City’s continued commitment to fostering the individuals, businesses and organizations that play a role in making New Orleans a world-class cultural hub,” said city leaders in a news release.

Through the study, city leaders said they will gain a better understanding of the challenges these people, businesses and organizations face and help them make data-informed decisions.

The study will start on May 10.

“We already know about some of the challenges and opportunities that face our music ecosystem, but hard data is the best way to move policy forward,” said Nighttime Economy Policy and Outreach Manager Julia Heath.
