City officials removing new stop signs in Uptown Martinsville, reactivating lights

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WFXR) — In an effort to increase pedestrian safety in Uptown Martinsville, the city converted five stoplights into stop signs back in March 2024. However, after monitoring the changes in traffic patterns, the city has decided to reverse course.

On April 23, the city announced that it would reactivate all stoplights at the following intersections:

  • Moss Street & W. Church Street

  • Bridge Street & E. Church Street

  • E Church Street & Walnut Street

  • E Church Street & Broad Street

  • W. Main Street & Wall Street

On March 25, the city began the process of replacing the stoplights with stop signs. Officials said the goal was to reduce speeding and increase walkability and pedestrian safety in the uptown area.

City officials say over the last month they noticed several issues that have resulted in the decision to reactivate the lights.
