City names interim fire chief

Mar. 25—HIGH POINT — Longtime city firefighter and Deputy Fire Chief Brian Evans was named the city's interim fire chief Monday as Chief Tommy Reid retires.

Evans has been appointed as the interim fire chief effective March 30, City Manager Tasha Logan Ford said.

"Deputy Chief Evans has 28 years of service with the High Point Fire Department, believes in ensuring the safety and well-being of our community and has demonstrated a commitment to growth in the fire service," Logan Ford said. "Brian continues to be committed to both the city organization and the broader High Point community."

Evans told The High Point Enterprise he is interested in the fire chief job permanently.

"I will apply," Evans said.

An executive search firm will conduct the process to identify the permanent fire chief, the city said in a news release.

Evans began his career with the High Point Fire Department in February 1995. He started as a firefighter and rose through the ranks to captain, battalion chief and assistant chief before serving in his current role as deputy fire chief starting in March 2018.

Evans has played a pivotal role in shaping the department's operations, budget and emergency response strategies, city officials say.

Reid announced at the first of March that he would retire after 43 years with the department and the past 11 years as chief. His retirement takes effect at the end of March.
