City marshals gather to discuss safety improvements when serving warrants

(KLFY)– City marshals across the state met in Lafayette to discuss how they will improve the safety of marshals when they are serving warrants.

This comes after Ville Platte Deputy Marshal Barry Giglio was killed in the line of duty. Giglio was conducting a narcotics search at a home in the 100 block of West Beauregard Street.

Lafayette City Marshal Reggie Thomas said officials are exploring how they can make equipment more effective to prevent tragedies like these.

“Officers are looking at body worn cameras, we are looking at body vests,” Thomas said. “It’s a time where we all come together, take a break, regroup.”

This week, marshals across the state were in Lafayette to collaborate on how they can serve citizens better, that includes protecting city courts.

“We want to make sure that the public is safe when the public comes to city court,” Thomas said. “That means how we gonna search people, make sure no weapons get inside of our court system.”

“We want to make sure that everybody is on the same page,” Thomas added. “It’s actually looking at good practices, what is other agencies doing maybe that we’re not doing, and this is what this conference brings to our association.”

Thomas said as time goes on, he believes conferences like this will help marshals and citizens stay safe while serving warrants.
