City leaders ask for CrimeStoppers tips in Orange Mound shooting

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — In the case of the deadly Orange Mound mass shooting, the executive director of CrimeStoppers says, as of this morning, the office has received about three dozen tips.

Wednesday, the reward for information leading to an arrest was increased to $25,000 after a contribution from the U.S. Marshals Service.

When it comes to combatting crime, city leaders say everyone has to come together.

“It is going to take literally all of us to be agents for change and for good,” said Jerri Green, a Memphis City Council member.

If you think you know something related to a crime, calling CrimeStoppers and letting investigators know is one avenue to help. The organization is an independent nonprofit.

“It’s extremely crucial to have people call us,” said David Wayne Brown, Executive Director of CrimeStoppers.

Hundreds of people were in attendance at this weekend’s block party in Orange Mound, which was also well-documented on social media. The party ended with two people shot and killed and another seven injured.

Now the investigation unfolds as to who engaged in the shooting.

“We want to thank the community because the community knows some of these individuals who are participating in these crimes and in order for us to be quick and exact in apprehending these individuals, we need input from the community,” said CJ Davis, Interim Memphis Police Chief.

“And when you call us, absolutely it is anonymous. We can’t even tell what phone number you’re calling from. The identification from that phone number instantly goes to Canada, where the phone number is stripped off, and comes instantly back to us so we never know who is calling us,” Brown said. “And the only way we can make a cash award to someone is if they call us later to ask if their tip worked and they have a secret number that they’ve been given when they call in.”

Payoffs then happen discreetly, under the radar. Again, the number to call is 901-528-CASH. Memphis Police say the typical reward has increased for the Orange Mound mass shooting.
