City of Kansas City workers prepare for weekend storms

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As severe weather rolls through the metro this weekend, the City of Kansas City says it’s ready.

Kansas City’s departments are working together to prepare for this weekend’s storms. Emergency management, parks & recreation, public works and KC Water said they’ll be staffed and ready to roll out when the storms hit.

Emergency management will help coordinate regional resources. Parks & Recreation has 105 employees with 40 trucks ready for storm response.

Depending on the severity of the storm’s damage, public works has another 100 employees, eight clam trucks and four loaders with buckets that could be deployed to help.

The two departments work together to clear storm debris — with busy streets being the first priority so traffic can continue to flow.

If small branches are on the roadway, public works will use clam trucks to pick them up.

When it comes to damaged trees, Parks & Rec takes the lead, cutting larger trees down into smaller pieces to be collected by public works.

KC Water has 100 employees ready to respond to storm damage, including blocking streets with barricades if heavy rainfall causes flooding.

Wastewater treatment workers will monitor the stations and facilities.

Parks & Recreation and KC Water both monitor 311 calls, so if you live in Kansas City and have a problem because of the storms, you can call 311 or file a report through the MyKCMO app.

Again, the city of Kansas City is ready for this weekend’s storms, with all departments working together
