City of Gonzales mayor leaving office after 16 years, moving to head of Louisiana Municipal Association

GONZALES, La. (BRPROUD) – The mayor of the City of Gonzales is moving on after 16 years.

Mayor Barney Arceneaux has been a public servant for over 40 years. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves and the Gonzales Police Department, according to the City of Gonzales.

Arceneaux took office in January 2009. He has led the city’s expansion to build parks and recreation facilities. This includes the new Price LeBlanc PACE Center.

Gonzales is also the second city in the state to create a Climate Action Plan. He has made big strides to add trees, use solar power at the sewer plant, cut single-use plastics and make recycling free for all, the city said.

“Over the last 16 years, with you at my side, we have learned what it takes to build a thriving city, invest in our community, culture, and resources, and set the stage for future prosperity. It’s been the honor of a lifetime to take this journey with you. The investments we’ve made in our city have bolstered our way of life and transformed Gonzales into a community where people can thrive,” said Arceneaux.

In 2017, groundwork began on Heritage Crossing, a new shopping center with food and housing. Parts of Heritage Crossing that have been built include Bronier Luxury Spa and Suites, Chicken Salad Chick, Hot Worx, Pho Viet Noodle House, European Wax Center, Jersey Mike’s and a Tropical Smoothie Cafe.

Arceneaux will take on a new role as the Executive Director for the Louisiana Municipal Association. He will lead officials from over 300 municipalities across Louisiana. He will support the association’s mission to advocate, educate and empower local government leaders to serve their residents well, the city said.

“Serving as your mayor was more than a job, it was a commitment. A commitment to serve, lead, and represent each and every one of you. It’s been the ultimate labor of love, where I’ve had a unique opportunity to work hand-in-hand with the residents who make me proud to call Gonzales home,” Arceneaux said.
