City council to approve underpass for High Line Canal

DENVER (KDVR) — Denver’s mayor and city council will meet Tuesday morning to approve a resolution that will allocate $13.75 million for an underpass on the High Line Canal Trail.

Spanning around 71 miles, the High Line Canal is a metro area gem, but the problem is that not all 71 miles of the High Line Canal have been created equally.

The canal passes through 11 jurisdictions, including Douglas County, Denver and Aurora. It’s owned by Denver Water.

The resolution that will be voted on at the city council meeting on Tuesday will approve a contract extension of a Colorado Department of Transportation grant for the High Line Canal underpass at Yale Avenue for $13.75 million. CDOT will contribute $11 million and the city $2.75 million to design and construct an underpass at the intersection of the High Line Canal Trail and E. Yale Avenue, just west of the S. Holly Street section.

The goal that officials have in mind is to alleviate a substantial barrier and safety concern for trail users at this location. So, instead of using a signal push button to cross a crosswalk, pedestrians will use an underpass, which is a safer and quicker way to get across Yale Avenue.

The meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m.
