City commission appoints acting East Grand Rapids public safety director

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The city of East Grand Rapids announced the appointment of the new acting public safety director.

On Monday, Ric Buikema was appointed as the acting public safety director during the East Grand Rapids City Commission.

The appointment comes after Public Safety Director Mark Herald’s retirement on March 6. He had been in the role for 18 years, according to a news release.

Buikema has been a member of the East Grand Rapids Public Safety Department for 27 years and served as captain for the past 10 years, the release said.

According to the release, the city is currently accepting proposals from search firms to help with the national search for Herald’s replacement. The search is expected to start in April.
