City Chick issues voluntary recall of barbecue sauces

The Cincinnati-base City Chick BBQ issued a voluntary recall on Friday of all varieties of its barbecue sauce, according to the Ohio Department of Agriculture.

Those varieties include the brand's mild, lo carb, hot and bourbon sauces, the department said in a news release. The sauces were packaged in 16 oz. and 32 oz. glass jars, as well as in one-gallon plastic containers.

"The products are adulterated because they were produced without the benefit of inspection, in which sanitation and safety requirements could not be verified," the release states.

The department said the sauces were available at Country Fresh Farm Market on Vine Street, Country Fresh Farm Market and Wine Depo on Beechmont Avenue and Luigi's Olde World Market on Cincinnati Columbus Road.

The sauces were also sold at various events and festivals held throughout the Cincinnati area and online via social media, according to the release.

No illnesses involving the sauces have been reported so far, the department said, adding that anyone who starts showing symptoms of foodborne illness or an allergic reaction should contact a physician.

Customers with any questions or concerns should contact Lynn Cox at 615-886-0041.

City Chick isn't the only Cincinnati-area company selling barbecue-flavored products to issue a voluntary recall in recent days. Grippo Foods Inc., the local snack food manufacturer, issued a voluntary recall last week of some of its Bar-B-Q potato chips.
