OpenAI says it plans to halt the use of one of its ChatGPT voices after some users said it sounded like Scarlett Johansson.
This week in AI, OpenAI launched discounted plans for nonprofits and education customers and drew back the curtains on its most recent efforts to stop bad actors from abusing its AI tools. OpenAI removed one of the voices used by its AI-powered chatbot ChatGPT after users pointed out that it sounded eerily similar to Johansson's. Johansson later released a statement saying that she hired legal counsel to inquire about the voice and get exact details about how it was developed -- and that she'd refused repeated entreaties from OpenAI to license her voice for ChatGPT. Now, a piece in The Washington Post implies that OpenAI didn't in fact seek to clone Johansson's voice and that any similarities were accidental.
Although the introduction of ChatGPT in late 2022 initially raised concerns about academic integrity and potential misuse in educational environments, universities have increasingly been experimenting with generative AI.
OpenAI is removing one of the voices used by ChatGPT. Users found that it sounded similar to Scarlett Johansson, the company announced on Monday, and Johansson herself released a statement saying she hired legal council to inquire about the Sky voice and get exact details about how it was developed. "We believe that AI voices should not deliberately mimic a celebrity's distinctive voice — Sky’s voice is not an imitation of Scarlett Johansson but belongs to a different professional actress using her own natural speaking voice," the company wrote in a blog post.
OpenAI announced this week that it’s removing Sky, one of the voices used by its new GPT-4o model, after users found it sounded eerily similar to Scarlett Johansson’s AI character in “Her.” While the company claims the voice was not based on Johansson’s, the actress said OpenAI had previously approached her about using her voice for the model. The U.S. Department of Justice and 30 state attorneys general filed a lawsuit against Live Nation Entertainment, Ticketmaster’s parent company, for alleged monopolistic practices.
OpenAI cast the actor of Sky's voice months before Sam Altman contacted Scarlett Johansson, and it had no intention of finding someone who sounded like her, according to The Washington Post.
Actor Scarlett Johansson has accused OpenAI of copying her voice for one of the voice assisstants in ChatGPT despite denying the company permission to do so.
Now its creator, OpenAI, on Wednesday announced that it has signed a major enterprise customer that it hopes will indicate how a similar effect could play out in the world of work. PwC, the management consulting giant, will become OpenAI’s biggest customer to date, covering 100,000 users. Alongside that, the consulting firm will become OpenAI’s first partner for selling the AI company's enterprise offerings to other businesses.
“[The] board was not informed in advance of that,” Toner said on Tuesday on a podcast called The Ted AI Show. “We learned about ChatGPT on Twitter.”

A data protection taskforce that's spent over a year considering how the European Union's data protection rulebook applies to OpenAI's viral chatbot, ChatGPT, reported preliminary conclusions Friday. The top-line takeaway is that the working group of privacy enforcers remains undecided on crux legal issues, such as the lawfulness and fairness of OpenAI's processing. Watchdogs can also order non-compliant processing to stop.
Meredith Whittaker has had it with the “frat house” contingent of the tech industry. In the course of our conversation, we delved into Signal’s interactions with Elon Musk and Telegram’s Pavel Durov, and — given its controversial clash with Scarlett Johansson — we discussed Whittaker’s candid thoughts about the leadership at OpenAI, which she likened to "dorm room high jinks.” Among other things, Whittaker is concerned about the concentration of power in the five main social media platforms, especially in a year when the world faces a large number of general elections, not least in the U.S., and Europe's reliance on U.S.-based, external tech giants.
OpenAI has reached a deal with Reddit to use the social news site's data for training AI models. Reddit content will be incorporated into ChatGPT, OpenAI's popular conversational AI, and the companies will work together to bring unspecified new "AI-powered features" to both Reddit users and moderators. OpenAI will also become a Reddit advertising partner.
The new model accepts any combination of text, audio and images as input and can generate an output in all three formats.
According to Bloomberg, the company is currently developing the capability, which can scour the web for answers to your queries and spit out results complete with citations to their sources.
OpenAI is collaborating with Stack Overflow, the Q&A forum for software developers, to improve its generative AI models' performance on programming-related tasks. As a result of the partnership, announced Monday, OpenAI's models, including models served through its ChatGPT chatbot platform, should get better over time at answering programming-related questions, the two companies say. At the same time, Stack Overflow will benefit from OpenAI's expertise in developing new generative AI integrations on the Stack Overflow platform.
X (formerly Twitter) has long had many active NSFW communities, and though the social network unofficially allowed people to post adult content, its rules have never forbidden or allowed such content outright. Over the weekend, X added clauses to its rules, formally allowing users to post adult and graphic content on the platform — with a few caveats. Users can now post consensually-produced NSFW content as long as it is prominently labeled as such.
