Anyone familiar with the iconic photos of supermodel Cindy Crawford in her heyday during the 1980s and ’90s will remember the beauty’s trademark look — and no, we don’t mean her facial mole. We’re talking about Crawford’s lush, brunette locks — with natural golden highlights — which made her stand out from equally glamorous supermodel contemporaries, such as chameleon Linda Evangelista and blond bombshell Claudia Schiffer.

Now 51 (and still stunning), Crawford admits she dyes her hair, but one challenge she encounters is recapturing the hue she was born with. Fortunately, that identical hair has been born again on the crown of her 15-year-old lookalike daughter, burgeoning model Kaia Gerber. So Crawford has no shame in bringing her mini-me to the salon in order to help her colorists recreate her original hue, using Gerber’s hair as a kind of template. It’s almost like taking a paint sample to Home Depot!

“I try to color my hair so that it looks natural,” Crawford told People. “I look at my daughter’s hair and I am like, ‘You have my old hair, and that is what I want, so I am taking you to the colorist!'” And it seems to be working, since recent pictures of the mother-daughter pair show identically colored manes.

Crawford goes on to get candid about the effects of aging on hair — a topic she feels is not spoken of enough. And she’s not just talking about going grey. “No one warns you that your hair changes so much,” she told the publication. “I knew I was going to have start coloring it, but I didn’t realize the texture was going to change. That was one of the biggest surprises about aging.”

According to Prevention, after the age of about 40, women can expect to notice changes in hair density, strength, and elasticity. The thickness of strands decreases, hair grows at a slower rate, and manes lose their shine due to “natural loss of fatty acids and keratin proteins.” Heat styling can make matters worse, according to Prevention.

But careful attention to hair health can make a difference, and Crawford — a woman who made her career by looking fantastic — knows this. “I am fortunate because I still have a ton of hair, but I am less likely to use a lot of heat on it,” she told People. She’s also a big fan of hair masks, notably Lush’s Jasmine and Henna Fluff-Eaze, which she applies while working out and then washes out when she’s done.

Serums are also workhorses in Crawford’s hair care stash — specifically Kevin Murphy’s Young Again. “It’s a serum for the ends, and I just love the name,” she said. “When I put it on, I’m like, ‘OK, make me young again!” she says of the product.

Skin care is also a major part of Crawford’s life and is obviously one of the reasons she looks so flawless in her sixth decade. She’s so proud of her radiant skin, in fact, that she has taken to posting makeup-free selfies on Instagram. Crawford mostly uses products from her own line, Meaningful Beauty — which she launched more than a decade ago with cosmetic surgeon Jean-Louis Sebagh. “She swears by her Wrinkle Smoothing Capsules and Ultra Lifting and Filling Treatment to keep her skin looking hydrated and healthy,” according to People.

“That’s one of the advantages of taking care of your skin — you don’t feel like you have to cover it up with makeup,” Crawford shared with People. “I don’t want to only present myself in one way so when people see me in person, they’re like, ‘Wow, she looks nothing like her pictures.'” Smart cookie.

As daughter Kaia’s modeling career takes off, the model mom couldn’t be more supportive, but Crawford is also acutely aware of the ways in which the public views her as an aging beauty. “I guess I don’t have a choice,” she said. “My only thing is that no one on social media needs to point out how I’m aging — I know. The aspect of our society that wants to criticize everyone else saddens me.”

That said, she refuses to let it get her down. “I feel so fortunate,” she said. “I am strong. I work out. I am healthy. I try to focus on that as opposed to picking myself apart.”
