Friends, family and the city of Cincinnati will get a chance on Friday to bid farewell to former mayor, talk show host and news anchor Jerry Springer.

They'll fill the 550-seat Memorial Hall in the city's Over-the-Rhine neighborhood for a celebration of Springer's life. Springer died April 27 near his home in Chicago after suffering from pancreatic cancer. Springer was buried in a cemetery in suburban Chicago, said Jene Galvin, Springer's longtime friend.

Galvin and a few of Springer's friends have organized Friday's event, which will feature musical performances.

"The whole thing is intended to be a very upbeat celebration of his life, as opposed to something with a more somber tone," Galvin said. "It culminates in music that will include 35 performers on stage."

Springer loved folk music, Galvin said, so the program will feature some of his favorite songs including "This Land is Your Land," and "Blowin' in the Wind." There will also be a video performance from Noel Paul Stookey, the "Paul" of folk group Peter, Paul and Mary.

There are no more tickets available for the public, Galvin said.

Springer's friends and family were invited to get free tickets for the event, Galvin said. Then a limited number were made available free of charge to the public. The tickets were snapped up within hours, Galvin said. The Memorial Hall website offers a wait list if any tickets become available.

The public can view a livestream of the event on Jerryspringer.com and on Fountain Square's big-screen television, Galvin said. The event starts at noon.

The media will not be allowed in the venue to cover it aside from some representatives with WLWT where Springer worked as an anchor, Galvin said.

"The family still wants some privacy from cameras and journalists," Galvin said.
