Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office seeking answers more than 3 years after teen’s death
Dear Cibola High School Community,
Today, thanks to information from a concerned party, we confiscated a gun from a
student’s pocket. Authorities swiftly apprehended the student upon his exit from the bus, and a subsequent search of the student led to the discovery of the weapon. The student was immediately taken into custody and now faces a one-year expulsion and criminal charges. The sequence of events leading up to the arrest did not necessitate a shelter-in-place
procedure. The student taken into custody made no direct threats to anyone and never
entered the school with the gun.I want to thank those who came forward to report this situation to keep our students
safe. Additionally, I commend the APS Police officers for their prompt response and
effective actions in de-escalating and detaining the student involved. Their swift
intervention helped to mitigate the immediate threat.Bringing a firearm on the bus or to school is unacceptable. It endangers the lives of our
students and staff and creates a major disruption of the education environment that is so critical to the success of every student at our school.I urge everyone to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. We all have a role to play in ensuring our school remains a safe place for learning. Remember: If you see something, say something.
