Churches feed St. Augustine’s University students still on Raleigh campus after shift to remote learning

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — For the last three weeks, some local volunteers have been keeping St. Augustine’s University students fed after the shift to remote learning earlier this month.

The University called for students to pack up and move out by April 3, as they went remote for the rest of the school year.

“There are those who couldn’t leave campus because of various activities,” said Pastor Charles Brooks.

Pastor Brooks is referring to student athletics, international students, and the senior class.

“I asked permission from the university to contact the area clergy,” he said.

He says he reached out to some local churches who didn’t hesitate to make sure the students received three nutritious meals daily for the remainder of the school year.

“We have successfully fulfilled the task. These students will be fed, and the meals are covered,” he said.

He says they have a coalition of volunteers who aren’t just feeding students but pouring them lots of love.

“The students will never forget the outpouring of what true love feels like and what it means to have this covering from our faith-based community,” said Associate Vice President for Professional Studies and Enterprise Services Dr. Cindy Love.

It’s an act of kindness school administrators hope will lead students to pay it forward.

“I think our students know they’re not alone and I think they’re inspired by the philanthropy of these churches,” said Janelle Watts, Dean of Students and Director of Residence Life and Education.

It’s a mission these churches say is a testament of what they can do together.

“This is the greatest gift of demonstration of Christianity, brotherhood, sisterhood, and family coming together when there’s a need in the community,” said Pastor Brooks.

Some local churches will also be coming together to host a Student Care Concert for the university on Saturday, April 27 from noon to 4 p.m. It will feature some national recording artists.
