How Chris Pine Got a Real-Life Shiner From Idris Elba While Filming Star Trek Beyond

The original 1960s Star Trek TV series became known for some well-choreographed brawls between Captain James T. Kirk and any number of alien adversaries.

But in their attempt to recreate the epic fights in the new film Star Trek Beyond, actors Chris Pine and Idris Elba got a little too rough. Luckily, no one seemed to mind.

"Fighting Captain Kirk was definitely like, 'What?!'" Elba, who plays the villainous Krall in the new film, told PEOPLE at the Comic-Con premiere in San Diego.

"All the Captain Kirk fights are always iconic, and here I was in the middle of one. It was great!"

"Chris Pine and I actually got a little too physical and he ended up with a black eye – which ended up in the movie, by the way!" revealed Elba.

"It was great," concurred Pine. "He gave me a black eye, and that was fun, and we used that. He's a big guy and we tussled and threw some fake punches. All in a day's work!"

In fact, there was no bad blood between the actors – quite the opposite.

"He thanked me," chuckled Elba. "He goes, 'I've never had a black eye before. I'm really cool!' "
