Chinese national gets 12 years in $100M international software piracy plot
WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) -- A Chinese national who pleaded guilty to taking part in a $100 million international software piracy plot has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Thirty-six-year-old Xiang Li of Chengdu, China, was sentenced Tuesday in federal court in Wilmington. Prosecutors say he will be deported when he is released from prison.
The charges involve a website that sold pirated software, designed for high-tech industrial applications, in which the access control mechanisms had been circumvented.
Prosecutors say Li engaged in hundreds of transactions through which he distributed more than $100 million in pirated software to more than 400 customers in at least 28 states and 60 foreign countries.
